What Is the Abortion Pill?
The term "abortion pill" refers to a medication abortion, which typically uses two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. Understanding how these medications work can help you make an informed decision about your pregnancy.
Mifepristone is taken first. It blocks progesterone, a hormone that is necessary for a pregnancy to continue. Blocking progesterone causes the pregnancy to stop developing and helps prepare the uterus for the next step. Misoprostol is taken afterward and causes the uterus to contract and empty. This results in cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy passes from the uterus.
Before taking medication to end a pregnancy, it is important to know how far along the pregnancy is and whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus. The FDA specifically states that mifepristone should not be used for an ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus and can become life-threatening if it ruptures.
If you are considering the abortion pill, you deserve the opportunity to understand how it works and what your options are before making a decision.
